anatoliy anshin
Anatoliy Anshin has been fascinated with the Japanese traditional culture since his youth. He has lived permanently in Japan for 20 years, during this period he earned his Ph.D. in pre-modern Japanese history and published a number of academic articles and a monograph in the field. He also became a teacher of Japanese swordsmanship, Kendo. Quite late in his life, Anatoliy embarked on picturing Japan's nature and historical sites through fine art photography.
Anatoliy’s photography is not preoccupied with stereotypical exotics, nor is it about merely capturing things Japanese, however beautiful they might look. It is aimed at visualizing and reconnecting with the spirituality of ancient culture that, although often lacking in modern daily life, is still accessible if we keep our hearts and minds open. He hopes his images will serve as landmarks to this rich and meaningful cultural heritage.

This photo is taken in February 2020 in the garden of a Buddhist temple Hasedera (established in the 8th century), Kamakura City, Japan.
Such water tubs are not rare in the gardens of various Buddhist temples throughout Japan. The rhombus is actually an identical square part of four different characters surrounding it. The characters say "I only know that enough is enough" pointing to one of the central Buddhist concepts of controlling one's desires and the ability to be content with little.
